Parts Oriented-Psychotherapy

What is Parts Work in therapy?

Parts work is a therapeutic approach based on the understanding that the human psyche is composed of multiple subpersonalities or “parts,” each with its own perspectives, emotions, and roles. Rather than viewing internal conflict or distress as pathological, parts work recognizes these internal divisions as adaptive responses to life experiences, particularly trauma. Approaches such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy conceptualize these parts as belonging to a larger internal system that seeks balance and healing.

The therapeutic process involves identifying, understanding, and compassionately engaging with these parts to foster internal harmony and promote access to the core Self—a calm, centered, and compassionate internal leader. This method has been shown to enhance self-awareness, emotional regulation, and psychological integration.

Why Parts-Oriented Psychotherapy Works

Rather than seeing emotional struggles or inner conflict as dysfunction, this approach recognizes them as signals from different parts of the self—each carrying valuable information, unmet needs, or protective intentions.

By gently connecting with these parts, clients learn to listen inwardly with curiosity instead of judgment, and compassion instead of control. This fosters deeper self-understanding, emotional regulation, and healing—not just at the level of thoughts or behaviors, but through the whole system: mind, body, and spirit.

When inner parts feel seen, supported, and no longer forced to act out or protect in isolation, they can soften. The person begins to feel more centered, whole, and aligned—with access to inner resources like intuition, calm, and confidence that may have felt out of reach.

How I Incorporate Parts-Oriented Psychotherapy in My Practice

In my work, I draw from parts-oriented psychotherapy to support clients in exploring the rich inner landscape of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I believe we are all made up of many “parts”—different aspects of ourselves that hold stories, emotions, and protective strategies shaped by our life experiences.

Rather than trying to get rid of these parts, we gently get to know them, with curiosity and compassion. This approach allows space for even the most reactive or vulnerable parts to be heard, understood, and ultimately transformed.

In sessions, we may tune into your internal world to notice what parts are showing up—like an inner critic, a protector, or a younger part carrying hurt. From there, we build relationships and trust with these parts, allowing your inner system to move toward more harmony, healing, and wholeness.

Because my approach is holistic and integrative, we may also weave in somatic awareness, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation tools—supporting not just the mind, but the body and spirit as well. My intention is always to help you reconnect with your True Self—the calm, wise center of you that knows how to lead with clarity and compassion.

What to Expect in a session working with parts:

Before we begin any deep work we must first have an initial session where we can specify the goals of the work, explore skills and assess if this work is right at this time.

Parts work can usually be completed in a single 45 min session. The process is done with eyes closed unless this is triggering. With guidance from me we connect with the different parts of ourselves and help them to heal as we learn to lead. If time permits and you are open I offer 5 min ish of Reiki to help ground and close.

Is Parts-Oriented Therapy Right for You?

Parts-oriented therapy can be a powerful path if you’ve ever felt like:

  • You’re conflicted inside—one part wants change, another holds back.
  • You’re hard on yourself and want to quiet that inner critic.
  • You feel stuck in patterns you know aren’t serving you, but can’t seem to shift.
  • You carry emotional pain or trauma that feels tucked away but still very present.

You long for deeper self-understanding and inner peace.

Taking the Next Step

Beginning therapy—especially something as personal and inward as parts-oriented work—can feel both exciting and vulnerable. If you’re feeling curious, uncertain, or even a little nervous, that’s okay. That may be a part of you showing up already, asking to be seen.

Parts-oriented psychotherapy invites you into a deeper, more compassionate relationship with yourself. It’s not about fixing what’s “wrong,” but gently uncovering what’s been held, hidden, or unheard—so that healing and integration can naturally unfold.

If you’re ready to explore your inner world in a safe, supportive space, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.

You can reach out to schedule a consultation, ask questions, or simply connect and see if this approach feels like a fit. Each step is taken at your pace, guided by your needs and your own inner wisdom.
